shi kit

shi kit

We are thrilled to welcome Shi Kit to our massage team and look forward to his sharing a unique form of Chinese medical massage, Tuina (pronounced ‘twee-nah’) with you. This form of massage is considered to be the oldest system of bodywork and one of the four main branches of Chinese medicine along with Acupuncture, Qigong and Taiji, and Chinese herbal medicine. Tuina is more vigorous than Swedish massage and works intensely on specific areas of the body. As a deep form of physical and energetic massage, it focuses on eliminating pain and balancing a client’s energy by removing energetic blocks and creating harmonious balance between yin and yang.

Shi Kit uses his hands to sense energy, discover where blockages exist and then works to eliminate them thereby addressing the root cause of the physical ailment. Upon doing so, he applies kneading, holding, pressing, lifting and rolling techniques, in addition to oscillation and pressure that differ in force and speed. Shi Kit specializes in addressing scar tissue at the bone level sustained from sports injury, falls, car accidents, surgery and the like. As a result, his bodywork may lead to some temporary discomfort during or after a session. Other aspects of his massage are gentle and relaxing especially when reinforcing its energetic effects.

His massage work also includes acupressure, foot reflexology, cupping and gua sha, along with assisted-stretching and joint mobilization methods to restore range of motion, flexibility and function to the muscles and joints. Another highlight of Shi Kit’s bodywork involves abdominal massage to remove stagnation and restore free flow of qi and blood to the abdomen and throughout the body. One method he employs is called “abdominal vibrational therapy” which involves application of a manual vibrational technique on the client’s abdomen. A second method is called one-finger-Chan Tuina where he uses one finger (mostly his thumb) to locate blocked areas on the abdomen followed by releasing them.

Shi Kit graduated from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2004 after a four year course of study in Acupuncture and Tuina. This was followed by a three year course of study in Traditional Chinese Medicine which included Chinese herbology. He then practiced at the Beijing Wang Jing Hospital where he did acupuncture and Tuina massage. Then, after emigrating from China to the United States in 2015, Shi Kit graduated from the Academy of Natural Health Sciences in Metuchen, New Jersey in 2019 where he learned Swedish massage, reflexology and deep tissue massage.
