men & women's health problems

I began this letter to you a couple of years ago and never mailed it. I am determined to finish and mail this one today. Several years ago I came to your office for help. I was in the middle of menopause and had just come from my gynecologist’s office, where I was given a prescription for Prozac. I had requested that prescription because for three weeks I was in the darkest, deepest depression I had ever experienced. I had had PMS before, but those dark days only lasted a day or two. With PMS I knew by the calendar why I felt so dark and I knew that it was temporary. But then came those three weeks of that same dark feeling. It just wouldn’t go away and I knew I needed help.

However, after I returned home from my gynecologist’s office, I looked at the prescription and thought that there must be another way, a healthier way, to deal with these hormonal shifts. I asked God to help direct me and shortly thereafter I thought about acupuncture. I called your office and asked if acupuncture could do anything for menopausal mood swings. The pleasant voice on the other end of the phone, Kim, assured me that it could. I made an appointment for the next day.

I was pleasantly amazed at how the deep, dark feelings left me even after only one session. I saw you several times the first month and then lengthened the times between visits. I still had days where I would feel the darkness descend, but it would only last a little while and then leave. Since the first acupuncture session I had with you I have not had more than a few hours of that darkness. Now, several years later, I cannot remember the last time I experienced any of those feelings.

Over these years, you have also treated me for several other ailments, all successfully. Two come to mind. One day I had a scheduled appointment with you which I considered canceling because I had a migraine headache. I have only had 3 or 4 migraines in my life, and I knew this was definitely one of them. I decided to drive to your office even though I was feeling quite nauseous because I remembered reading that acupuncture can relieve headaches. By the time I got into the treatment room in your office I was really feeling poorly. I took note of where the trash can was because my nausea had built considerably on the drive to the office. I knew I’d be needing that trash can. About 15 minutes after you began the treatment you came in to check on me and see how I was doing. In those 15 minutes the nausea had lessened considerably. Another 15 or 20 minutes passed and you checked on me again. My headache had lessened considerably and the nausea was almost completely gone. You asked if I could stay another 15 or 20 minutes and I said I could. Twenty minutes passed and you came in to see how I was. I was completely pain and nausea free. In addition to that, I was energetic! I felt good! I have never had a headache of that intensity leave me that quickly. Normally, it would have taken several doses of pain medication to relieve the pain and, if the pain left, I would feel completely exhausted and weak. That session was truly miraculous. I felt so good that I went home and my husband and I went out to dinner and had a wonderful evening.

The other ailment is my white blood count. For as long as I can remember my white count has rarely, if ever, been in the normal range. It has always been below normal. My doctor first noticed this when I was a student in college. That was several decades ago. Recently my primary physician noted the continuous below normal white counts and sent me to a hematologist. The lowest normal count should be 34000; my lowest recorded count was 24000, that was 10,000 below normal. The hematologist was concerned and wanted to send me for a bone marrow test. I asked you at my next visit if acupuncture could improve my white count. I was told that it could and that acupuncture was used in treating such immune disorders as HIV and AIDS. My next blood test was the first recorded white count in the normal range for me in many years. It continues to be in the normal range and I continue to come in every 4-8 weeks. A few times, just to test it, I would let several months go by and my count would go down again. I would return to acupuncture and my white count would go back up in the normal range. In fact one recent count was 45000! That's the best one so far.

In addition to the wonderful medical results I have experienced, I have to comment on you and your staff. Every member of your staff that I have met has been polite, knowledgeable, warm and caring. Your care for me the day of the migraine could not have been better if you had been my own mother. I appreciate you and your staff so much. Thank you for all your help.

With love and appreciation, PC

In 2009 I had seen an increase in my PSA. Not think much of it since my levels usually ran higher I again had a PSA test droning my yearly physical. The PSA level was about the same, only 4.5 but I sought to find an urologist to check the issue. After visiting a few, I finally had a biopsy in February 2010, which revealed prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 6.  After much reading and consultations and at the requests of my family I decided finally to have robotic prostatectomy in September 2010. I thought after all the reading I was prepared for the result and aftermath, I discovered I was not. I followed all the recommendations, hundreds of kegel exercises prior to surgery did not have the outcome I expected.  I was not getting much aftercare or input from the surgeon so I began to look to practical and alternative medicines.

I had studied martial arts for many years and began to look at how the removal of the prostate effects the Qi of the body as it related to the kidney, bladder and urinary and sexual function but also and probably for me, regaining balance with the mental and physical aspect of post surgical recovery.

I was fortunate to discover Red Bank Acupuncture & Wellness Center and Shoshanna and her staff. After an interview and discovery session to gain an understanding of my situation, my expectations and goals we began a course of treatments. The acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment are focused on correcting the root imbalance in the body but also the mind. I was having a difficult time not being able to control outcomes and shorten recovery. The course of treatment had and immediate effect in changing my mental outlook which helped me to then focus the benefits of Shoshanna treatments on the balancing of my body and healing.  My treatment was twice a week to begin and we did increase to three times a week for about six weeks.

After three months I asked about therapeutic message and we began deep tissue message along with the continuation of acupuncture twice a week.  My message therapists, Lauren, is understanding, compassionate and adapt at her profession and focused on helping you regain your wellness and balance.

Coupled with bio-feedback physical therapy, because I had no idea if I was executing the kegels correctly, I began to see dramatic improvement in my mental state and increased abilities to regulate my urinary functionality and healing.  You will find a connection to you as a person and what the persons wishes for recovery which I did not find with my surgical physician.

My thanks to Shoshanna, Lauren and the entire staff, Michael, Will and Liz, of Red Bank Acupuncture & Wellness Center for helping me regain balance and wellness. I am willing to speak to you if your situation is similar to my own and the benefits I derived from the Center and I continue to experience during my healing. Thank you again.          M.D .
